Khat - “Voodoo Child” & “Traphouse” (Mixtapes)

November 1, 2011

After seeing his name around a couple of blogs, I decided to take matters on to my own hands and see what Khat was all about. Although there is basically little to nothing known about Khat, I have read that he is part of The Weeknd’s XO group/movement. There are people speculating whether Khat is a group or solo act, my guess is that he is just a multi-talented artist. Khat has released two projects in the last month or so. The first one being Voodoo Child, followed by Traphouse earlier this month. Both free albums have almost the same structure and similar sounds.

Khat has been compared to The Weeknd and I can understand why. They have a similar soulful synth in their melodies. Although at times, Khat’s lyrical content seems much darker than Abel’s emotional lyrics, you can see the similarities. At the end of the day they are both great different artists. If you enjoy Abel then Khat shouldn’t be a problem.

A few of my personal stand out tracks from Voodoo Child are “Homeless,” “Ritalin,” and “Ring of Fire.” As for Traphouse I have to say that “Mumbles,” “Magic Touch,” and “Fire Red” are my favorites. Make sure to give both albums a spin or two down below. Enjoy!

BADBADNOTGOOD - “BBNG” (Album)

October 29, 2011

Jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD have released their first full on project, titled BBNG. BADBADNOTGOOD cover the likes of Nas, Flying Lotus, Joy Division, Gangstarr and probably my favorite, a rendition to Legend of Zelda’s Ocarina of Time.

BBNG is not an album for everyone, you must have an appreciation for jazz or least be open minded to a different sound. Although, I am sure that any hip-hop head can relate to it. Enjoy!

  • Song: Initiation
  • Artist: The Weeknd
  • Album:
Played 20 times [Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

I am guessing The Weeknd does not believe in breaks, Abel released “Initiation” a few days ago now. “Initiation” might just end up on his upcoming release Echoes of Silence, which is set to drop some time this fall/winter. “Initiation” is something completely different from what we have heard from The Weeknd in the past. Abel sure does finds ways to reinvent himself.

Life Around Creativity (L.A.C.) - “The WeekEND” (Mixtape)

October 11, 2011

SAM.Rocka, X Mayyne, Skinny and Knowname are back with their latests mixtape, The WeekEND. L.A.C are no strangers to Above All Rules so if you don’t have their last project Some Other Shitget to it now. This time around the Miami natives’ smoothness on the tracks is nearly impeccable.

If you want some fun, dope hip-hop to vibe to and smoke to especially during the weekends (yes pun intended), then this is the right mixtape for you. The WeekEND is not only a mixtape to zone out to but you can also appreciate the lyrical abilities that L.A.C has as a whole.

Make sure you give it a listen down below, especially track #15, which is one of my favorites. Don’t forget download this dope a** mixtape  and to support your local artists!

Melo-X - “BK AllNighter”

Mustafa drops another set of visuals from his highly rated mixtape, More Merch. Melo has been on his A game when it comes to his videos. One of the people responsible for his great videos is Dr. Woo, who directed “BK AllNighter.” This is what Melo had to say about the experience:

What better way to end the summer than having a BK AllNighter at the Brooklyn Museum’s legendary first Saturdays and giving Brooklyn’s own Jay-Z the official video release for his Life + Times website. On a warm summer night in Brooklyn MeLo put a call out for all the Kings & Queens of the city to represent one time. This piece is directed by one of MeLo’s frequent collaborators Jay Woo. Together they create a visual work of art that exudes exquisite taste, exhilarating ambiance and Royal Elegance.

Terius “The-Dream” Nash - “Long Gone”

The-Dream delivers the first visuals for one of my favorite track from his latest project 1977. “Long Gone” is a track that not only I can relate to but I am sure that plenty of people can relate to as well. 1977 has been gaining a lot of fuss and why shouldn’t since it is f@#$%^& dope. Anyways enjoy the video and make sure to download 1977
